The dots on the braille page made Sarah’s heart swelled with joy. She could finally learn just like other children. Her eyes couldn’t see, but her mind opened in ways she never thought possible.
Meet Sarah, a 14-year-old blind girl from a small village in Jinja – Uganda, has never seen the faces of her family, the beauty of the landscape surrounding her, or the pages of a book. In a world where sight is so often taken for granted, she has never attended school and is hopeless as a blind child.
Her family is too poor to afford even the basics— She spends her days in silence, sitting on the cold, dirt floor of their small hut, listening to the world outside but never able to be part of it. Every sound reminds her of the life she wishes she could live but can’t. She longed to contribute, to feel like she mattered, but her blindness made her feel like a burden.
But the hardest part came when she got her first period, terrified and confused, Sarah didn’t know how to manage her menstruation, it was more than she could bear. No one had prepared her for the pain & the blood.
Her family couldn’t afford sanitary pads, so she used old, dirty rags that only added to her shame—uncomfortable, unsanitary, and humiliating. Without clean water or soap, she couldn’t manage her hygiene. Every month, she would hide, too ashamed to be seen, afraid of staining her clothes, her periods became a monthly nightmare.
But it’s not just her period. Every part of Sarah’s life is a battle—finding clean water, clothes, or food. She can’t even afford sitting on the road to beg for help, and each day feels like a reminder of what she’s missing: dignity, independence, and hope. leaving her isolated, hopelessly giving up on life in a world that doesn’t seem to care.
But everything changed one day when we visited her village. We had heard about Sarah and other children like her, and we came with a mission: to provide sanitary and educational materials in Braille and connect them to schools equipped to teach and care for blind children. For the first time in her life, Sarah held a book in her hands that she could read with her fingers. The dots on the page unlocked a new world, and her heart swelled with joy. She could finally learn just like other children. Her eyes couldn’t see, but her mind opened in ways she never thought possible.
Sarah’s story is just one of many. Thousands of blind children in Jinja – Uganda are facing the same challenges—isolated from education, menstrual hygiene, misunderstood by their communities, and living in poverty. But with your help, we can change that.
Your donation can provide:
Did you know? over 70% of girls and in Uganda cannot afford a $5 sanitary pad, and many rely on unsafe alternatives. This issue is even more severe among orphaned and blind girls, who face significant challenges in accessing menstrual hygiene products.
Without proper menstrual hygiene products, they face significant health risks, including infections, reproductive health issues, and urinary tract infections, due to the use of unsafe alternatives which can cause death. Additionally, societal stigma can lead to mental health challenges and further marginalization.
Even a small contribution can make a big impact. Imagine the joy of a child discovering the world through Braille or the pride of a family seeing their blind child thrive. Together, we can give blind children in Uganda a chance to learn, grow, and dream.
